Our storyHow it began

Amara and Idris, standing close together in the evening light

They met in the winter of 2021 at a cousin’s dholki in Model Town, where Idris had been put in charge of the chai and Amara had been asked, quite firmly, to supervise him. He used too much elaichi. She told him so. He has not used too much elaichi since.

What followed was two years of long phone calls, a shared shelf of Urdu novels and an unresolved argument about which nihari in the old city is worth the queue. Their families noticed well before either of them admitted anything, and waited with great patience and very little subtlety.

Idris asked in the spring, at Shalimar Bagh, at an hour chosen to avoid the crowds that turned out to be the hour everyone else had chosen too. She said yes before he finished the sentence. We would be glad to have you with us for the rest of it.

QuestionsGood to know

What time should we arrive?

The baraat sets off at 6:30 pm. We say this with the confidence of people who have personally briefed every uncle involved, so please be seated by 6:15. The Mehndi and Valima keep gentler hours.

Are children welcome?

Yes, at all three evenings. There will be a quiet room at Gulab Bagh for anyone, of any age, who needs a pause from the dhol.

What will the weather be like?

Lahore in late November is clear and cool, around 12°C after dark. The Mehndi courtyard and the Baraat lawns are open to the sky, so bring a shawl or a light jacket.

Where should we park?

Valet parking is provided at Gulab Bagh and Zarnigar Hall. For the Mehndi, leave the car at the Delhi Gate parking area; the lanes beyond it are narrow, lovely and were not built with SUVs in mind. Attendants will walk you in.

Is there a gift registry?

There is no registry. If you would like to mark the occasion, a handwritten note will be read more than once and kept for a long time.

Dress codeWhat to wear

We would love to see traditional Pakistani formal wear. Please keep cuts modest, with shoulders covered, and choose shoes that can manage old brick for the Mehndi.

The Baraat leans into rose and jewel tones; the Valima is quieter, in pastels and ivory. If you would like to wear the house colours, these are ours.

Until thenSee you in Edinburgh
