Our story

A borrowed book

We met in a bookshop on Via Brera in the spring of 2019, both reaching for the last copy of Calvino’s Invisible Cities. One of us let the other have it. Twenty minutes later, over an espresso, came a polite request to borrow it once it was finished. The book was never given back.

We have agreed on almost everything since, except the lake. One of us swears Como is at its best at dawn, glassy and silver before the first ferry. The other maintains it only makes sense at midnight, when the villas are lit and the water holds them. Six years in, neither of us has conceded.

Last October came a five o’clock wake-up, a borrowed rowing boat out past Tremezzo and, for one morning only, an admission that dawn might be right. The ring was tucked inside that same copy of Calvino. We would love you there as the argument continues, at every hour of the day.

Questions

Good to know

How do we get to Lake Como?

Fly into Milan Malpensa or Linate, then take the train to Varenna, about an hour from Milano Centrale. Ferries cross the lake to Tremezzo and Bellagio every half hour.

How do we travel between the venues?

We have chartered two launches from the villa jetty to Bellagio at quarter past six, and return boats to all three hotels run from half past eleven until one.

What should we wear on our feet?

The gardens are terraced and paved in old gravel. Block heels or elegant flats will serve you far better than stilettos, and bring a wrap for the water after dark.

Are children invited?

We adore your children, but this will be an adults-only celebration. The hotels can recommend trusted local sitters.

Do you have a gift list?

Your company across the Alps is gift enough. If you would like to mark the day, a small contribution to our honeymoon in Sicily would delight us; details will follow by email.

Attire

Black tie by the lake

We invite you to dress formally, in jewel tones, deep neutrals or a little metallic shine. Think of an evening that begins on the water and ends under lanterns.
