Counting the days
We begin at three o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday 12 June. Please be seated a few minutes before.
Field notes
They met over a disputed fern. Idris, volunteering at the Bovey Valley field station, had labelled a specimen as soft shield fern; Amara, visiting with a hand lens and strong opinions, said it was nothing of the sort. They were both partly right, which is still how most of their arguments end.
The second meeting was arranged, though neither will say by whom. There was a walk along the Wray, a downpour, and a flask of tea that Idris maintains was mostly Amara’s. Seven years, two flats and one ill-advised sourdough starter later, the hand lens lives on the kitchen windowsill.
Last spring, on the same footpath, Amara produced a ring from a seed envelope marked No. 214. Idris said yes before reading the label. We’d love you there when we make it official. Muddy shoes entirely welcome.

Your invitation names everyone we’re expecting. If you think someone has been left off by mistake, write to us before 1 June and we’ll sort it out kindly.
We adore your children, and we’d love you to have an evening off. Babes in arms are, of course, the exception.
Flagstones at the chapel, then lawn and gravel in the walled garden. Block heels, flats or a sturdy brogue. Stilettos will aerate the lawn whether you mean them to or not.
Newton Abbot is the nearest station, about twenty minutes by taxi. A coach runs from the chapel to Hensleigh House at three, and back to Lustleigh and Moretonhampstead at midnight.
It’s Devon in September, so it might. Supper is under a long canvas awning, the barn is dry, and the bonfire has survived worse.
Dress code
Think a well-kept walled garden, not a ballroom. Tailoring, tea dresses, linen, and a good jumper for after dark. Hedgerow colours are encouraged. White is best left to the cow parsley.
With love, and in anticipation
